Benefits of Sports Massage
"The idea is to rid the muscles of toxins and rid the body of scar tissue so the blood can flow back into the area giving your muscles the nutrients they need to recover. I'm going to work right up to the edge of your comfort zone, promises Colleen Casey ZUM Massage Director".

Proper warm up and foot pain
Q & A with Peter Shmock, ZUM Founder: "The way most people stretch prior to running -- does little if anything to prepare for a run or reduce the chance for injury. The best way to prepare to run is to progressively warm up, with the key word being progressively".

Benefits of stretching may be overstretched
Recent studies show that the benefits of traditional stretching may not produce the benefits we may have assumed. ZUM trainers use unique movements called "active stretches" to effectively warm and loosen up their clients prior to exercising. Rather than having a client kick her heel to her bottom and hold it there -- the trainer will have her slowly mimic a runner's stride. "All stretching should be, really, is moving," Peter Shmock, ZUM founder says.

Spring Training
Whether you're a baseball star or a weekend warrior, Club ZUM emphasizes "functional" training -- comprehensive movements geared toward function rather than focusing on building this or that body part in isolation. Seattle Mariners catcher Dan Wilson gets ready for the baseball season at ZUM by working with balls and weights, often while fighting to retain balance and engaging core muscles.

Turf: Urban Living -- Celeb Pick
Radically unlike the typical health club, ZUM's members are encouraged to aim not toward a certain ideal, but a well-functioning body that's there for them when they need it. ZUM is "a place for people who want to learn how to take care of themselves."

Sweat It, Or Don't: A walk in the park proves exercise can still be fun
ZUM founder Peter Shmock's philosophy of doing what you can now, having fun, and a goal of life long fitness is encouraged over pushing too hard for short term results. Exercise doesn't have to feel like punishment, he says.

New fitness classes appeal to exercisers' need for novelty
"For an hour every Friday evening, Andrew Shuman, 32, is transported back to high-school gym class. With an instructor brandishing a stopwatch and shouting "move it, move it," Shuman jumps over miniature hurdles, sprints around cones, then drops to the ground for 20 push-ups. But instead of a squeaky gymnasium, Shuman and his classmates are in the Survivor class at Belltown's swish workout spot Club ZUM (pronounced "zoom")".

Tuning In: ZUM challenges the mode of conventional health clubs
"This gym is perfect for someone who really wants to get fit," says Paula Tobol, 37, of Seattle, who was a trainer herself for 10 years and now is senior marketing manager for Deloitte & Touche. "They have the best trainers, awesome equipment, a nice facility -- it's really one of the best gyms I've been in -- and it's not intimidating." That last point helped her talk a friend who'd never belonged to a gym into joining. "She loves it, she's lost weight, and she's happy."
