ZUM is not just about exercising. It's about moving with fluidity and efficiency. About the quality of action, not quantity of work. It starts with genuine care for the individual.
ZUM :: Founder
ZUM founder Peter Shmock is a two-time Olympic track and field athlete (1976, 1980) and former Director of Strength and Conditioning for the Seattle Mariners. He has been recognized as the region's foremost trainer and fitness educator for over 20 years. Peter has a national reputation for programs that are creative and insightful, not to mention irreverently fun.

Peter works with professional, world-class and recreational athletes, along with people who may not consider themselves athletes at all. Doctors, physical therapists, and health professionals across the Northwest respect and value Peter's track record of success, and regularly collaborate with him in working with clients. Peter often consults with executives, business groups and youth concerning the refinement of performance, whether on the playfield, in the boardroom or in everyday life.

Peter's expertise was developed through his instinct to learn from master teachers. These experts mentored his development as a "thinking man's athlete," and later helped him become a master teacher to the ZUM staff. Peter's staff continues this lineage, and club members benefit accordingly.

In his youth, Peter's first guide was Ralph Kroger, a former Mr. America, from whom he learned the value of discipline and the skill of using the mind to help overcome perceived obstacles. At the University of Oregon, Peter's track coach was the legendary Bill Bowerman who was later Peter's 1976 Olympic team coach and co-founder of NIKE. Bill taught Peter how to achieve optimal balance between work and rest, and proved that under-training is better than over-training.

Later in his athletic career, Peter learned to streamline and refine his methods of strength training from Don Cundy, four-time World Powerlifting Champion. Tom Tellez, Peter's 1980 Olympic Team coach -- who also trained gold medalist Carl Lewis -- taught him the diligence required in practice. Gao Li Ting, a t'ai chi master, dancer and choreographer, inspired Peter with his grace, fluidity of movement and attitude of pure enjoyment.

Peter's current mentor, since 1994 is Ken Lloyd Russell (thewayofseeing.com) who has created The Way of Seeing (r) which shows how to bring awareness and meditation into everyday life in a simple, realistic way. This has enabled Peter to be more in touch with his depths and produced in him a wonderful sense of joy and enthusiasm for living. Part of his ongoing work with Ken involves exploring how to integrate awareness into exercise, allowing the physical experience to be more effective, safe and enjoyable. It also invites the possibility of positively impacting other aspects of members lives. This has always been part of Peter's vision for ZUM; using the physical as a foundation to produce enrichment in all apsects of a persons life.
